Many GCSE students know their texts, but still miss out on top marks. Why? Because high-grade essays are about more than just quotes. They need structure, insight, and strategy.
If you're aiming for a Grade 8 or 9 in English Literature, this guide will show you what examiners actually want to see and how you can start writing essays that stand out.
1. A Clear Line of Argument from the Start
Top-grade essays don’t sit on the fence. They present a strong, focused argument that runs through the whole essay.
✅ Tip: Open with a one-sentence thesis that answers the question directly. Then make sure every paragraph links back to that idea, it shows you’re in control of your answer.
2. Don’t Retell the Story — Analyse It
It’s tempting to summarise what’s happening in the text, but that won’t earn marks. Examiners want analysis.
✅ Tip: Pick a quote, zoom in on a word or phrase, and explain what the writer’s doing and why. Insight is what separates a Grade 5 from a Grade 8.

3. Smart Language Analysis
You don’t need big words. You need to show you understand the techniques.
✅ Tip: Spot a device (like metaphor, irony, contrast), name it, and explain its effect. This shows depth and helps your essay sound exam-ready.
4. Context That Supports - Not Distracts
Examiners don’t want a history lesson. Context should strengthen your argument, not take over the essay.
✅ Tip: Add context only when it helps your point. Try things like:
“This reflects Victorian fears of reputation...”
“Shakespeare’s audience would have seen this as…”
5. 🧾 Finish Strong With a Real Conclusion
Repeating your points isn’t enough. A top-grade conclusion adds clarity and leaves a lasting impression.
✅ Tip: Restate your argument confidently and explain why your interpretation makes the most sense.
